The
Mounted Patrol Unit was instituted formally in the winter of 1999
- 2000. The unit rides horses and are utilized for ceremonial occasions,
park patrol, and other patrol functions where there is a need for
an officer to have the ability to patrol in a quiet fashion, but still
maintain the ability to make a fast response. The unit brings a bit
of history to the current times. The unit always receives a warm reception
from the public.
The
unit has been used in the Home Town Celebration, National Night of
Prayer at Rose Park, Christmas in the Park, MISD Field Days at the
local parks, and many other functions within the city. The horses
are able to take officers through trails connecting the city parks
where conventional patrol cannot go. This has assisted the Department
when the unit finds truant children hiding deep in the parks and to
prevent criminal activity.
Mounted Patrol consist of Chief Steven Noonkester,
Officer J. Valles,
Sgt. D. Griffin, Reserve Commander T. Aaron, Detective M. Malcom,
Officer T. Wing, Sgt. K. Lanier, Officer T. Penkala, and Officer M.
Roberts.
