Need a reason for a block party? Plan one for National
Night OutOctober 7, 2008 and get to know neighbors, local officials
and how to fight crime. National Night Out is a nationwide observance
sponsored by local police departments to encourage interaction between
neighbors as a crime prevention tool. Law enforcement officials also
use the event to teach other safety measures to residents. Neighborhoods
throughout the City of Mansfield are invited to join forces with thousands
of communities nationwide for the "24th Annual National Night Out"
(NNO) crime and drug prevention event.
Reports from the 2006 celebration noted more than
34 million people participated, representing 10,000 communities from
all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases
worldwide. City of Mansfield Nation Night Out has grown to more than
50 neighborhood parties registered city wide (increase from 42 in 2004
and 48 in 2005). This is the fourth year the City of Mansfield, as a
community, has gone all out. The City has received national recognition
the last three years in a row for the combined city wide efforts.
Our
focuses this year will be two fold -
1. Neighbors getting to know and socialize with each other with the
goal that the more they get to know each other, the more likely they
are to watch out for each other. This would enable them to know what
activity is normal and what is suspicious, and to take action. They
are encouraged to meet neighbors surrounding their homes by completing
forms with contact information.
2.
Mansfield PD will ask residents to focus on crime prevention that results
in their own neighborhood crime watch. The more neighbors get to know
each other, the more they look out for each other. By this, it allows
neighbors to share information and will aid in their own crime watch
prevention on keeping homes, neighborhoods, and the city safe.
We believe in the two focuses we will
be able to meet the Goals and objectives of National Night Out.
National Night Out is designed to:
1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
2. Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts;
3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships;
and
4. Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized
and fighting back!
Notes for potential coordinators
Every year we encourage small block parties.
Coordinators consist of homeowners associations with no Crime Watch
program; Crime Watch program, but no homeowners association; and neighbors
just wanting to have a block party. Many HOA's had small block parties
for an hour or so and then would come together in their pool or park
areas and have a large community event (or the reverse). This was very
successful. We will encourage that again this year.
The Police and Fire will attempt to visit all parties.
The schedule is based on first come, first serve in registrations. The
visits cannot be guaranteed due to manpower and public safety call load,
but strong efforts are made every year.
