Uniformed Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the "backbone" of the Department, by responding to calls for police service in the City of Mansfield. The Patrol Division consist of uniformed officers that are first responders to 911 calls and complaints from citizens to insure public safety. Patrol Division is tasked in enforcing criminal laws, traffic laws, city ordinances, and maintaining public peace and safety.

The Patrol Division utilizes marked patrol units during their course of duty. The Patrol Division has five shifts that consist of Day Shift, Day Power Shift, Evening Shift, Evening Power Shift, and Midnight Shift. Power Shifts is a shift that overlaps two shifts to assist in the availability of the Patrol Division to respond to any 911 call or complaints from citizens without any unnecessary delay during changing of manpower and add more manpower in the City of Mansfield during the prime hours.

Patrol Division currently has about 43 patrol officers. The Patrol Division skills vary by each Patrol Officer. The following are types of certification some officers have within the patrol division: Accident Investigation; Bicycle Officer; Crime Scene Officer; Crisis Negotiation; Field Training Officer; Intoxilyzer Operator; K9 Handler; Mounted Patrol; Tactical Entry Team; and TCLEOSE Certified Instructors certified to instruct many law enforcement courses.

The first line supervisors of the department are the Patrol Sergeants. There is currently 6 Patrol Sergeants that break down into five shifts, who report directly to the Patrol Commander. The Patrol Sergeants maintain the day to day functions and actions of the Patrol Officers. Patrol Sergeant(s) also are assigned to supervise specialized divisions and functions within the city.

The senior Sergeant of the Patrol Division is Sergeant Mark Smouse. Sergeant Smouse has been with the Department since 1983, and has been a Patrol Sergeant since 1994. Sergeant Smouse is currently one of the Day Shift Supervisor and he also supervises the Intoxilyzer Operators. In addition to his duties, Sergeant Smouse serves as one of the Departments TCLEOSE Certified Instructors.

Sergeant Dan Tripp has been with the Police Department since 1996 and has served in several capacities during that time including Criminal Investigations, Field Training, Tactical Unit and Traffic Enforcement. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2000 and handles Recruitment for the Department. Sergeant Tripp is currently one of the Midnight Shift Supervisor.

Sergeant David Griffin has been with the Police Department since 1997 and has served in several capacities during that time including Community Resource Division and Mounted Patrol. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2001. He was appointed as the Patrol Commander in September of 2004. He moved back into uniformed patrol as a Sergeant in May of 2007. Sergeant Griffin is currently one of the Midnight Shift Supervisor.

Sergeant Jim Harrell has been with the Department since 1997. He was appointed as a Patrol Sergeant in 2002. Sergeant Harrell is currently the Street Crime Supervisor and Mansfield SWAT Team Leader. In addition to his duties, Sergeant Harrell serves on the departments Field Training Officer, Field Training Coordinator and a TCLEOSE Certified Instructor.

Sergeant Rudy Hille started with the Police Department in 1996. He left the department in 1999 and returned back to the department in 2000 and has served several capacities during that time including Training Coordinator and TCLEOSE Instructor. He was appointed as a Patrol Sergeant in 2006. Sergeant Hille is currently one of the Evening Shift Supervisor.

Sergeant Ken Hopkins has been with the Mansfield Police Department for 11 years. Sergeant Hopkins began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Austin Police Department. During his time at Austin PD, he had served in Patrol and the Street Crimes Unit. Prior to beginning his career in law enforcement, he was in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division for 6 years, including a combat tour in Iraq in 1990 and has attended the University of Texas at Arlington. Sergeant Hopkins has served the Mansfield Police Department in the Patrol and Traffic Divisions, as well as an FTO. Sergeant Hopkins is currently assigned as one of the Day Shift Supervisor, and is serving in the Department's Crash Investigation Unit. Sergeant Hopkins is the Detail Commander for the Departments Honor Guard.

Sergeant Jason Turpinat has been with the Mansfield Police Department since 2000. He has served in the capacity of a Field Training Officer and is currenty a supervisor and reconstructionist on the department's Crash Investigation Unit. Sergeant Turpinat spent 3 years in the United States Army prior to his law enforcement career. He is currently assigned as one of the Evening Shift Supervisor.

Sergeant Daniel Sherwin began his Law Enforcement Career with the City of Lake Worth in October 1988. He served as a Patrol Officer, CID Investigator, Swat Team Member and Explorer Post Advisor. He joined the Mansfield Police Department in January of 2001. He currently serves as a Patrol Supervisor, Field Training Officer and Team Leader of the Crisis Negotiation Team. He currently holds a Master Peace Officer Certification and received the Hostage Negotiator of the Year Award in 2006 for the State of Texas. Sergeant Sherwin is currently one of the Evening Shift Supervisors
