Traffic Division

TheTraffic Division of the Mansfield Police Department is charged with the task of traffic compliance through the use of education, high visibility and targeted enforcement of traffic violators. The division is currently comprised of two motorcycle units and a patrol unit. The unit was reinstated in 1999 after a long period of inactivation following the untimely death of Motor Officer Danny Cordes in 1986.

The two motor units are operated by the Officer Mike LeMoine and Officer Thad Penkala. The patrol unit is operated by Oficer Ken Hopkins. Both motor unit officers operate BMW 1150 RTP motorcycles.

The use of motorcycles is unique because of the ability of the officers to become highly maneuverable and complete tasks not possible for officers in a regular patrol unit. The motorcycles have been used for such things as funeral escorts, escorting buildings being moved through the city, dense crowd enforcement, parking lot details and other assignments.

Becoming a motor officer is not easy. After an initial application and interview process, the officers must undergo a very intensive two week qualification school in which the rider and motorcycle are pushed to the absolute limits of their abilities. It is a significant mental and physical challenge to complete.

Due to the rapid growth of the City, the unit has become an increasingly vital division within the Department. In the near future, more motor units are scheduled to take to the streets in an effort to make Mansfield a more safe municipality for its citizens.
